Lil and 'The Doc' - a life in pictures

The sequence begins with photographs of The Doc joining the Navy in 1915, and then moves onto his time at Wormwood Scrubs, and then to the HMS Armadale Castle which he joined in September 1916 in Simonstown, South Africa.

Following his discharge from the Navy, the record picks up his time with Lil on Robben Island (1919-1927), including christening and early photos of their son Billy.

There are many photographs of their time on Robben Island. The collection concludes with images of Lil’s and Billy’s passage back to England following the Doc’s death in 1927, and finally with a portrait of Lil with Billy, taken shortly before he joined the RAF in 1939.
